In the Mahabharata Anushasanaparva Chapter 155, the following is recounted by
Bhishma to Arjuna. Bhishma himself was told this by Vayu,
while extolling Agastya. Once the devas, after being humiliated in battle by the asuras, came to Agstya for help. Agastya promptly started burning the asuras with his tapas energy, and many of them fell to the earth and the netherworld. He let them live, but devaloka was finally rid of Asuras.
